Computational Methods in Engineering
STUDY PROGRAMME
Computational Methods in Engineering
Degree Conferred
Master of Science (M.Sc.)
Duration
4 Semesters
Enrollment
Wintersemester
Admission restriction
No restricted admission
Entry requirements
Relevant bachelor's degree (at least 180 CP) and an average grade of at least 2.5 determined from the examination results.
Proof of subject-specific competence through:
- at least 15 CP in the competency area of Mathematics and Computer Science,
- 40 CP in the competency area of basic engineering principles (including 10 CP of Technical Mechanics, 5 CP of Fluid Mechanics or Thermodynamics)
If the degree has not yet been obtained at the time of application and no more than 25 CP are missing until the completion of the bachelor's degree program, an application is possible. Nevertheless, proof of subject-specific competences and the determined average grade of 2.5 must be provided at the time of application (except uni-assist applications). Furthermore, sufficient knowledge of the English language at the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages must be demonstrated.
Applicants must provide one of the following proofs:
TOEFL-Test C1 (95-120 iBT)
IELTS C1 (7.0)
CAE (Certificate of Advanced English)
or asking for an equivalence test at the examination board of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
Application deadline
Applicants with German Bachelor degree

Objectives
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can draw on a portfolio of knowledge, skills, and competencies in the field of numerical simulation, modeling of engineering problems, and a profound understanding of mechanical issues. Graduates specialize in simulating structures, fluids, thermomechanical processes, and electromechanical interactions, and are capable of translating complex physical systems into mechanical models and utilizing appropriate tools to predict system behavior through advanced numerical analysis.
Career Perspectives
The methods in the field of Computational Methods in Engineering are the future-oriented techniques that modern engineers need. Typical applications include among others:
- 3D structural analysis, nonlinear dynamics, optimization, multibody dynamics, crash simulations, and acoustics in automotive engineering and general mechanical engineering
- Fluid-structure interaction, structural optimization, supersonic flight properties, and high-temperature loads in aerodynamics and process engineering
- Material models (e.g. bones, tissue), prostheses, implants, and artificial blood vessels in biomechanics and medical technology
Graduates will work professionally at the interfaces between mechanical engineering, process engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and mathematics as specialists in numerical analysis and simulation of complex technical problems. They bridge the gap between classical engineering disciplines, mathematics, computer science, and software development.
Competencies and Interests Required
Good knowledge in natural science and technical fields; interest in computer science and simulation, in thinking in systems and structures, as well as in complex problem solving, working in interdisciplinary teams, and taking on leadership roles.
More information
The academic education with the degree M.Sc. from Otto von Guericke University provides sufficient prerequisite for further postgraduate education in the field of engineering and related areas (e.g. doctorate).
