The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation maintains a list of institutions and individual researchers who are open to hosting Ukrainian researchers. Among them are also professors from the OVGU.

The aim of Cara is to defend education and science. Cara helps academics at immediate risk around the world to flee to a safe place and continue their work.

The scholarships are intended to support the academics to bring themselves and their families to safety, to be able to continue their research and later, if it is in their best interest, to return to their country of origin.
The organisation's assistance is comprehensive. It supports and accompanies scholarship holders at the beginning of their careers - for example, those who want to obtain a postgraduate degree - but also in the search for a suitable position in research and teaching for those who already have a doctorate.

The standard duration of the scholarships is between 2 and 3 years and they are aimed at people who are not yet in exile but who need support in escaping.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), together with the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), has made demands on the Federal Government for support for Ukrainian students and academics. Among other things, support programmes for universities to admit Ukrainians should be made possible quickly. They are concerned with subject integration, scholarships, unbureaucratic extensions, support for partner universities, etc.

In addition, the DAAD has launched a website that serves as a platform for collecting information and assistance for Ukrainian students and researchers. It contains information on residence, university admission, studies, research and everyday life. These are all written in German and English. The Ukrainian version is constantly being expanded.

The worldwide Scholars at Risk network (SAR) supports threatened scientists in resuming their research activities. This is done by arranging teaching positions in the countries of refuge, counselling and career support.
The network primarily supports lecturers and researchers with a doctorate - in exceptional cases also at MA/MS level - as well as professors.

The Scholars at Risk network has defined the threat requirements as follows:

• the applicant must be exposed to a high direct risk
• directly threatened (including the threat) of violence, torture, unlawful detention or prosecution.

The creation and placement of the positions for the researchers takes place within the SAR university network. In most cases, these are funded by the host universities. The SAR does not usually offer fellowships or research grants.

Regarding an allowance for the family of the scholarship holder, this will vary from case to case. This depends on various factors. Among other things, immigration restrictions of the country of refuge play a role.

Since the SAR does not offer permanent positions, it is possible to look for further positions through the network after the end of the temporary position if the threat in the country of origin persists.

The Science4Refugees initiative and the EURAXESS portal offer refugees access to a European research community as well as a comprehensive range of information and support services on working and living in Europe. Created by the European Commission, the initiative helps refugee scientists:in search and find jobs in Europe. The refugees will be able to benefit from the refugee welcoming network of universities, research institutions and companies in Europe.

Ukrainian researchers can benefit from the Science4Refugees initiative without having to have refugee status.
