University celebrates 10 years of the Germany Scholarship

On July 7, 2021, the anniversary event for the Germany Scholarship took place at the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg. Since 2011, the university has awarded scholarships twice a year to particularly talented and committed students. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary, scholarship holders, alumni and friends and supporters of the university met for a summer event at the FestungMark in Magdeburg.

The national scholarship program was launched in 2011 by the German Ministry of Education and Research with the intent to promote and financially support high-achieving students. The University of Magdeburg was one of the first universities to participate in the program from the very beginning. Former rector and keynote speaker at the anniversary event, Prof. Klaus-Erich Pollmann, recalled the time: "We had set ourselves the goal of starting with 30 scholarships in the summer semester of 2011. Finding the right sponsors for this was challenging. I'm very happy that we made it and can now look back at ten years of successful sponsorship work."

Over 400 students supported

Since 2011, more than 400 students have been sponsored with a Germany Scholarship at Magdeburg University, and more than 90 sponsors have supported the program since then. Students from over 60 nations have applied for funding until 2021. Among them is J. Cheyyanda from India, an OVGU alumna and former Germany Scholarship recipient, who thanked her sponsors at the ceremony: " Due to the Germany Scholarship, I was able to fully concentrate on my studies and successfully complete them. The support of my sponsors has helped me a lot." In addition to monetary support, the junior scholarship program also aims to bring students and sponsors together and build a network that radiates in all directions.
