Place of remembrance for a thousand years of foundry history

21.06.2023 -

Magdeburg has a long foundry tradition. For example, the world-famous bronze door of Novgorod was cast here in the 12th century. In 2014, this craft tradition came to an end with the closure of the last foundry. A three-meter-high bronze stele now commemorates this great industrial culture of the city on the campus of our university. In the presence of the State Secretary for Structural Change and Major Settlements of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, Dr. Jürgen Ude, and the Lord Mayor of Magdeburg, Simone Borris, it was given a new place of permanent presentation in front of Building 12, the home of the Department of Primary and Primary Technology at the Institute of Production Engineering and Quality Assurance. In a joint project of the Kuratorium Industriekultur in der Region Magdeburg, our university and an international group of artists*, the three-meter-high bronze stele "Time" was created in memory of this great tradition. It was cast in 2018 at the Magdeburg Museum of Technology.

"The bronze stele will enrich and inspire our campus, where young people from over 100 nations study and research together," said the rector of our university, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Strackeljan, at the ceremonial unveiling of the stele.
