Research prototype awarded

A research prototype developed at the VLBA Lab of our university by Andrey Kharitonov brings state-of-the-art artificial intelligence solutions to industrial applications. The developed artifact "Fujitsu BestPlace" was awarded the "Fujitsu Global Innovation Award for Intellectual Property". The research project is based on sophisticated approaches for data analysis, optimization and machine learning. In addition, however, the efficient provision of such solutions as a service to commercial enterprises is also part of the research project, enabling a direct transfer of scientific progress to industry.

"This award illustrates the appreciation of the long-standing scientific cooperation for Fujitsu and confirms the relevance of the practice-oriented research carried out in the VLBA Lab," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Klaus Turowski, under whose leadership the research work was conducted as part of the scientific cooperation between OVGU and Fujitsu. Furthermore, the award underlines the scientific and technical expertise of the VLBA-Lab and highlights the successful transfer of this expertise by the VLBA-Lab from the academic world to industrial application.

In 2012, the VLBA Lab of OVGU and Fujitsu jointly established a long-term research and development cooperation in the field of Very Large Business Applications (VLBA).  The VLBA Lab deals with the design, development and operation of very large business application systems and system landscapes (Very Large Business Applications). Specific research topics are e.g. IT Systems Engineering, IT Service Management, Applied optimization and machine learning, and innovative technologies such as Big Data, Industrie 4.0 or In-Memory Computing.

Very large operational application systems, such as SAP S4 HANA, support and optimize critical business processes of large, globally operating companies. Such operational processes include, for example, ordering, procurement, shipping processing, accounting, and dunning.  Efficient operation of such application systems is critical to minimizing operating costs and carbon footprint. Fujitsu BestPlace helps large enterprises find the best placement for their application systems in hybrid cloud environments. It provides solutions that incorporate operational costs and carbon footprint while taking into account performance requirements.
