Objectives

Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary engineering science that combines mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science. The focus is on the holistic consideration of an ever-increasing number of mechatronic products, whose performance results from the intelligent interaction of mechanical, electrical and information technology components (e. g. vehicles, robots, drives, power tools, consumer electronics, ...). Students acquire a solid basic knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences, as well as knowledge of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, information technology and computer science. These basics are combined with essential fields of application in a practical and systematic way. Optional modules in the 6th semester also allow individual profiling and specialisation.

Majors

Optional compulsory modules from the areas:

  • mechanical systems
  • electrical systems
  • embedded systems/control

Career Perspectives

The degree qualifies graduates for the direct entry into a career in more application oriented areas such as product or software development, production, quality assurance or sales. Typical fields of occupation for engineers in mechatronics are primarily the automotive industry, all branches of the mechanical engineering and electrical engineering industries, medical technology, traffic and environmental technology. In addition, the Bachelor's degree qualifies students to continue their studies in a (consecutive) Master's programme.

Competencies and Interests Required

Good knowledge and interest in mathematics and natural sciences as well as fun with technology and interdisciplinary work are best prerequisites for successful studies.

More information

The programme includes an industrial internship (work experience) lasting in total 20 weeks. In this context, it is recommended that an eight weeks long preparatory internship is completed before the studies begin.

Mechatronics is offered as a joint programme of the Faculties of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
